Gerald Haman, the relentless Chicago-area inventor of ideation and brainstorming tools and founder of innovation consultancy SolutionPeople, has just launched version 4.0 of his highly regarded KnowBrainer ideation tool (click here to read my review of the last version of the KnowBrainer).

What’s new in this version?

  • 20% of the cards in this hinged ideation deck are new. Gerald is constantly on the lookout for new questions, key words, images and other stimuli that deliver the greatest “return on ideas.” This new content reflects his drive to constantly improve the effectiveness of the KnowBrainer.
  • Better questions: Gerald has developed a “questionation” methodology that is incorporated into this version of the KnowBrainer, which results in more provocative questions, and therefore better ideas.
  • Clearer directions: The new version of this brainstorming tool incorporates improved instructional design, enhanced graphics and improved color coding to make the tool easier to use.
  • Stage-Gate alignment: The stages of the KnowBrainer’s brainstorming process, which were formerly named according to Gerald’s proprietary Accelerated Innovation process, have now been renamed as “stages,” to better align it with product development Stage Gate models.

I’ve been a long-time fan of the KnowBrainer, and I’m very pleased to see that Gerald is committed to continuous improvement of it. Too many brainstorming tools are introduced by their inventors, and remain in their initial forever. The KnowBrainer is a notable exception, and it’s well worth the $99 investment.
