Roger von Oech, author of the best selling creativity classic, A Whack on the Side of the Head, recently announced that an expanded and updated 25th anniversary edition of this seminal book will be available in early May.
I’ve always been a fan of Roger’s work, especially this book and its companion card deck. The stories, anecdotes and creative challenges are quite stimulating, and the illustrations by George Willett are thought-provoking and entertaining in their own right.
In a more recent blog post, Roger provides more details on what’s new in this edition, the fourth since this fascinating and entertaining ideation book was originally published. We’ll let him explain:
“The core ideas of ‘mental locks’ and my discussion of the creative process are the same. As are a number of stories and exercises. I’ve kept the old favorites. But I’ve also been able to add a number of new anecdotes, provocations, and strategies. Plus, this one has a ‘Breaktime’ in the middle for the reader to stretch out.”
In this interview, Roger also reflects on how the environment for creativity has changed over the last quarter-century.
I can’t wait to get my hands on this updated version of a long-time favorite “muse.” Hopefully, Roger plans an updated version of the Creative Whack deck? (Hint! Hint!)
