Flow: Discerning the creative opportunities around you

Here’s a fascinating quote about individual creativity from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s book, Flow, as reported in Curt Rosengren’s Occupational Adventure Weblog:

“What, among human talents, is the most precious one? ‘The ability to discern opportunities around oneself, when others do not,’ answers the author. ‘The individual who is truly engaged with the world — interested, curious, excited — is never at a loss for opportunities to experience flow.’”

This is the essence of creativity: To perceive opportunities around yourself, and to focus your creative efforts on ideas to capitalize on them. As Curt points out, opportunities are often all around us, if only we had the eyes to see them. Developing this “insight outlook” is a terrific way to add passion to daily living, and it’s just plain fun! In fact, the InnovationTools Web site owes its existence to this type of opportunity thinking. I had a vision in my mind of the ideal innovation site. But I couldn’t find such a site anywhere on the Web — so I created it myself!
