David Kelley on Designing Curious Employees

Leadership is all about designing an environment that supports employees’ curiosity, and and cultivate their intrinsic motivation and creativity, explains design thinking guru David Kelly. To ensure that his firm, IDEO, hires people with innate curiosity, the firm asks interview questions to determine how they use their intuitive and analytic minds to solve problems.

IDEO goes to great lengths to empower their people and to make them feel a sense of ownership and shared mission. Those efforts include teaching employees a process to improve their creative confidence, and exposing them to experiences to build that confidence. Its leadership approach is based on coaching instead of task management. As Kelly points out, you can’t teach people your values and what’ expected of them via a PowerPoint presentation.
